Work Design Magazine highlights the transformation of IPG UM’s NYC office, designed by Ted Moudis Associates. The office went from a traditional model to an agile workplace with a neighborhood format, and to stay on budget, TMA retained strategic existing spaces and removed/rebuilt other areas. Existing offices were maintained but converted to new meeting rooms that better supported agile workplace needs.

Kate Wieczorek, a workplace strategist at Ted Moudis Associates, talks about the value of the open plan workplace, in response to the recent Harvard study citing negative effects on collaboration for that particular design. Her points address the implications and considerations an organization must assess when transitioning into a new space, as well as considering the right methodology and process to truly measure collaboration. A variety of enclosed and open spaces, alternative work seats, amenities, and support spaces are key spatial requirements for a successful office design – however, these requirements must align with and support an organization’s culture, priorities, and strategic goals.

Two more luxury designers are moving their offices to 693 Fifth Avenue, joining Valentino in the 20-story building. Escada will expand its office space in the move, signing a lease for 5,844 SF, while international menswear designer Bugatchi Uomo will move into 6,072 SF. Since acquiring the property, the ownership, affiliates of the Paris-based holding company FIMALAC, has worked with the Savitt Partners’ team of Michael Dubin, Elliot Zelinger and Greg Lafayette to attract upscale tenants that would complement the existing occupancy, as well as further enhance the overall value and cache of the exceptional office property.

Long Island Business News talks with architects, engineers and construction managers about the increasing levels of specialization that is expected by their clients. John Finamore, Director of Business Development at EW Howell Construction Group notes that “clients today are more sophisticated, and they expect personnel with skills and experience in sectors that can be matched to their projects. Specialization leads to many efficiencies.” However, Finamore adds that too much specialization can create “tunnel vision,” and that firms must be cognizant of industry trends.

A Kalmon Dolgin Affiliates team of Neil Dolgin, Grant Dolgin and Josh Dolgin represented the tenant and owner Richfield Properties in a 15,000 SF, second floor lease at 100 Sutton Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for SH-Sutton Street, a builder and renter of artist studios and offices. In 2016, KDA arranged a first floor lease for Ready Set, a design and construction firm, at 100 Sutton.

Bill Edwards, a vice president of security services at Thornton Tomasetti where he heads the firm’s operational and technical security services team, said expanding the perimeter between a school’s entrance and publicly accessible spaces like parking lots and installing ground-level lighting are easy, security-inspired design fixes. “The number one thing across all markets is how do you secure a school while maintaining it as a learning environment,” Edwards said.
