Brian Mirakian of Populous talks with Jeff Steele of Forbes about esports and how it’s poised to be the next “crowd-pleasing spectator sport.” Populous’ current project is the Fusion Arena in Philadelphia, the largest purpose-built esports arena in the U.S. and the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. According to Reuters, global esports revenues are anticipated to reach $1.1 billion this year, with North America generating $409 million.

Brian Mirakian, a senior principal with Populous, an architectural firm known for designing spaces that bring people together, talks with The New York Times about the rise of esports and how it has spurred the adaptation of smaller spaces for a richer fan experience. Now, enormous arenas are being built with e-sports in mind. The firm was recently announced as the designer for Comcast Spectator and Cordish Companies’ Fusion Arena in Philadelphia and previously worked on the esports Stadium in Arlington, TX.

New York City’s construction industry threw its might into Construction Safety Week earlier this month with a series of events, including a panel discussion hosted by the CUNY Graduate Center on Construction Safety Innovations and Best Practices. Carl Oliveri, a partner at Grassi & Co. moderated a discussion featuring EW Howell safety director George Grauer, Philip Zazzera, vice president of Environmental, Health & safety at Pizzarotti, Marianne Santarelli, safety director at Gilbane Building Company and Louis Cendagorta, chief inspector of CDA and Suppression Units for the Fire Department of New York.

The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark, a new family resort destination in the Catskills set on a portion of the 1600-acre site in Monticello, NY where famed The Concord Resort was formerly located, is open in time for the summer season. RAL Development Services served as the owner’s representative for EPR Properties, working to coordinate and facilitate the development and construction of multiple diverse elements comprising the overall resort.

Kimmerle Newman Architects was recognized by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association’s New Good Neighbor Award for its design of a biotech firm’s new HQ in downtown Jersey City. Kimmerle oversaw the furnishing, branding and interior design of Scynexis’ 19,7245-SF office space at One Evertrust Plaza. The firm also won a Good Neighbor Award for the conversion of a three-story, 36,389-square-foot office building at 111 Littleton Road in Parsippany from a tired, Class C building into a modern Class A structure.

Center at Innovation Drive, a 288,000-SF office property in Tewksbury owned by Rubenstein Partners, has a new tenant. Raytheon Co., a technology and innovation leader is leasing 134,000-SF across two floors for its 600 employees. Rubenstein purchased the Center at Innovation Drive campus — the former Wang Laboratories HQ — in 2014, investing $33 million for renovations and amenities.

Pickard Chilton, a New Haven, Conn.-based architecture firm has been tapped by Hines, a global real estate firm, to design a large, next-generation urban development in Stuttgart, Germany. Called “Die Fuge,” or “The Seam,” the 1.4-million-square-foot environmentally-friendly project will create new office space, flexible and modular H-shaped office buildings, exterior courtyards, public space, and other amenities. At the Westchester County Association and Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation’s 3rd Annual Real Estate Summitt in Tarrytown, 300 regional businesspeople, including leaders in real estate, government, and planning discussed five projects that will have an economic impact on the region. Among them is Simone Development Companies’ redevelopment of 104 Corporate Park Drive in Harrison in partnership with Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. The four-story building will become an ambulatory health center for pediatric and teen care that will bring 250 new healthcare opportunities to the county. Construction is beginning this summer.
