Waterton, a real estate investor and operator announced the grand re-opening of The Citizen at Shirlington Village in Arlington, Va. Waterton upgraded all of the 404-unit property’s existing amenities to meet the needs to modern renters, including a community room, a7,000-SF fitness center, outdoor pool, fire pits and five courtyard areas. There are also individual work pods. Living space upgrades include contemporary cabinets, stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops and upgraded plumbing and lighting fixtures.

Daniel Peek has joined Hodges Ward Elliott as the new president of the firm’s hotel group. Based in New York City, he will lead the HWE hotel group and work to build the firm’s overall hospitality brokerage platform, increasing transaction volume and developing new and existing client relationships. The hospitality industry veteran has completed more than $30 billion in hotel sale, debt and structured finance transactions over his career. He joins HWE from HFF, where he worked for 12 years as the senior managing director, head of hospitality practice.

Craig Deitelzweig, CEO of Marx Realty, is featured in an “At the Desk of” in June’s The Real Deal. He talks about preserving the character of buildings, his favorite surfing spots and pushing for the Guggenheim to move to LIC. Today, Deitelzweig focuses on Marx’s effort to blend aspects of the hospitality business into its office spaces — adding amenities not traditionally seen in commercial buildings, such as doormen. The firm’s portfolio, spanning 2.2 million square feet in New York City, includes 10 Grand Central, where Marx’s headquarters is located.

Brian Mirakian of Populous talks with Jeff Steele of Forbes about esports and how it’s poised to be the next “crowd-pleasing spectator sport.” Populous’ current project is the Fusion Arena in Philadelphia, the largest purpose-built esports arena in the U.S. and the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. According to Reuters, global esports revenues are anticipated to reach $1.1 billion this year, with North America generating $409 million.

Brian Mirakian, a senior principal with Populous, an architectural firm known for designing spaces that bring people together, talks with The New York Times about the rise of esports and how it has spurred the adaptation of smaller spaces for a richer fan experience. Now, enormous arenas are being built with e-sports in mind. The firm was recently announced as the designer for Comcast Spectator and Cordish Companies’ Fusion Arena in Philadelphia and previously worked on the esports Stadium in Arlington, TX.

Kimmerle Newman Architects was recognized by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association’s New Good Neighbor Award for its design of a biotech firm’s new HQ in downtown Jersey City. Kimmerle oversaw the furnishing, branding and interior design of Scynexis’ 19,7245-SF office space at One Evertrust Plaza. The firm also won a Good Neighbor Award for the conversion of a three-story, 36,389-square-foot office building at 111 Littleton Road in Parsippany from a tired, Class C building into a modern Class A structure.
